overview of the project
Every country has a story, a way that their country came to be. Most of these countries also had a flag that they rallied to when they needed something to look to. A flag represents your hope for your country, and this is important, especially during a revolution. What I am interested in is how those flags came to be. Who created them? What do they represent? How have they evolved over the years, and why did they evolve? These are all questions I mean to answer.
How the countries are grouped together
The countries of Latin America will be lumped together in one of several groups. Instead of explaining each country separately, I will explain them in regions and then narrow down to the individual countries to help paint the bigger picture. It is easier to do this way because all of the country's histories are tied to each other this way. In many cases, two countries might have flags that are almost identical to each other because their histories are so similar. South America was divided up into several districts, called Vice royalties. They will be divided up into the Viceroyalties of New Spain, Peru, New Granada, Plata, and the Caribbean (which was controlled by New Spain), and Brazil, run by Portugal. Note that the Viceroyalty of the Rio de la Plata as well as Granada were originally under the Viceroyalty of Peru.
